LeseprobeCOLOGNE, STADIUM, 9:40 PM.
Sara stands in the row of backing singers and sings. In front of her, Lilith in silver; behind her, the band; beyond them, 50,000 people, a sea of light. Sara glances toward the wing. Josh sits at the lighting desk with his headset on. He smiles at her. Sara smiles back.
Lilith begins her solo. Sara misses the beat, bumps into Jade and falls to the stage floor, right in the middle of Lilith's highest note. The audience laughs. Lilith stops singing, irritated. The band stops playing. Lilith turns around. She walks over to Sara, grabs her by the wrist, pulls her up and drags her to the front edge of the stage, into the spotlight. Into the microphone: LILITH: Fifty thousand people paid to see me tonight. Not you. You stand in the back so nobody has to look at you. That's what I pay you for. But if you love the light so much, then sing. She presses the microphone into Sara's hand and steps back. Sara stands alone in the light. She can't get a sound out. Her hand with the microphone is shaking. The stadium goes quiet, then someone laughs, then thousands laugh. Jade grins, two dancers whisper. At the lighting desk, Josh pushes every fader down. The stadium goes black. A cry runs through the crowd. In the dark, Sara runs off the stage. At the stage stairs, only emergency lighting. Sara leans against the railing, breathing hard. Outside the lights come back on, and Lilith sings the next song. Sara silently mouths the words. Fade to white. SIX MONTHS AGO.
A small studio at night. Sara takes off her headphones. Rick sits at the mixing desk; he has just listened to her demo. RICK: This will be Lilith's next hit. Her name goes on the record, and mine as the writer. Nobody will ever know it's yours. You never have to stand on a stage. SARA: Then I'll write you every song you want. Fade to white. TONIGHT. At the stage stairs. Lilith comes down during the break before the encore, Dana beside her. Lilith stops in front of Sara. LILITH: At the encore you go out there and apologize to me. In front of everyone. Or you're out of the hotel, off this tour and out of every band in this business. Tonight. Lilith climbs the stairs, back onto the stage. The stadium chants her name. Into the microphone: LILITH: Someone owes you an apology. You'll see her in a minute. The stadium cheers. A spotlight swings down the stairs and hits Sara's face.
